At UTEP, we believe that talent comes from everywhere: from all zip codes, all cultures and all backgrounds. And, for the past 30 years, we have cultivated talent throughout our region, earning the Brookings Institution ranking as the #1 research university in the nation for promoting student social mobility.

Jorge Lopez, UTEP Professor of Physics, can attest to our efforts from multiple perspectives. Growing up in Ciudad Juarez, he discovered his talent and passion for science at a young age, but options for him to pursue his dream were limited. He turned to UTEP and, inspired by his professor mentors, began a journey he says “changed everything.”

Professor Lopez received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UTEP in physics in 1977 and 1979, respectively, and his Ph.D. in nuclear physics from Texas A&M in 1986.

Following four years of post-doctoral work, Dr. Lopez returned to UTEP and launched a successful career in research, teaching and student mentorship. It was his turn to inspire a generation.

His efforts to enhance student opportunities have earned him the U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring and Nature's lifetime achievement award in mentoring. Like many of his colleagues, Professor Lopez both defines and inspires UTEP's mission.

After almost 30 years as a professor, Professor Lopez’s impact spans generations. One family, in particular, can boast both first and second generations of alumni who have published with him. A third-generation student is already making plans to study physics at UTEP, specifically with Professor Jorge Lopez.

Join us in our efforts to cultivate the people of the Paso del Norte region. Your gift to the “Thank You for 30” campaign is an investment in UTEP’s continued mission of creating meaningful opportunities for access and excellence, uniquely preparing our graduates to compete with their peers anywhere in the world.
