Jo and Dr. Haskell Monroe, Jr.

Haskell Monroe is an educator, administrator and lover of history. As President of UTEP between 1980 and 1987, he helped shape the future direction of the school while also teaching a freshman history class, one of the most well-attended on campus.

“I loved El Paso and the Southwest,” recalls Haskell. “What I loved most was seeing the ‘light bulb’ come on in the face of a student who made a connection after a classroom assignment – priceless!” Haskell played a critical role in his tenure as President, helping to raise money and building the University Library. He additionally was responsible for increasing private giving to the school, expanding the scholarship/financial aid office and recruiting students from throughout the state.

Now retired and living in College Station, Jo and Haskell Monroe have continued making a difference at UTEP. In 2013, they established the Jo and Haskell Monroe, Jr. Library Special Collections Endowment. “We felt that an investment in the Library was really an investment in the students…and Haskell loved both!” shared Jo. Their gift will provide a permanent source of support for ensuring that critical research is possible through the use of the archives of the University Library.
